This piece began as a picture of a politician, the image incomplete, the eyes unavailable in particular. It was also intended to have a creeping plant of some species potted beneath it to climb its slats. This purpose has yet to be realized. The image remains mysterious and compelling on its own.

The foundation of Joe's work. In painting, Joe discovered the possibilities for visual communication and the greatest historical inspiration. His canvasses are largely earlier works, though he will return from time to time to paint on panels or found surfaces.
