Bernhard Bernhard

Oil on Paper 18" x 24"

Thomas Bernhard: Austrian dramatist and author, with a body of work composed in language of radiant sophistication and savage directness. Playwright Joe Hortua, a thoroughly auditory thinker and addict to dialogue by his own admission, is a devotee and introduced Joe to his work. This portrait of Bernhard's penetrating genius was composed out of gratitude to Hortua for the introduction and for a splendid experience at the staging of the Hortua play "Between Us".

The foundation of Joe's work. In painting, Joe discovered the possibilities for visual communication and the greatest historical inspiration. His canvasses are largely earlier works, though he will return from time to time to paint on panels or found surfaces.
