Lemonade from lemons. This and the rest of this series of ceramic objects were the result of a pottery experience under the able guidance of potter, Missy McCormick. As excellent as the instruction was, Joe, experiencing the wheel for the first time could get the clay above a few inches. Laying aside his feelings of inadequacy and any metaphorical implications concerning his creative potency, Joe was able to take the odd low forms that resulted from his neophyte experimentation and exploit their aesthetic and implied functional interest by concentrating on their intriguing randomness. This quality was further enhanced through experimentation with surface and glazes, so that what appeared at first to be utter failure became intriguing addresses in their own right of a mysterious and challenging process.
