Mold Master
Terra Cotta Mounted on Wood
1989
This profile was constructed for a casting project very early in Joe's formal art making experience. The thick clay form, unfired, was pressed into wet sand. Plaster was then poured into the sand negative to create casts of the clay original. The piece Joe subsequently created from the plaster casts was less successful and did not survive the years. The master, however, proved far more interesting and was fired, pocked as it was with sand, and eventually varnished and mounted on two layers of prepared wood.
Private collection.
