Patriot Mask
Buff Clay with Cloth Flag
1997
One of three masks completed under the tutelage of Tim Shuckerow at Case Western Reserve University. The process was a press molding execise potentially for use with elementary- and secondary-aged students. Plaster molds were first taken of the students' faces then sheets of clay were pushed into them to create a base for subsequent manipulation using further amounts of clay. In the event, this mask was only to be a proof, and was damaged in the kiln. It was reassembled for the most part, and languished for a while as a test bed for paint applications until a chance encounter with a discarded Fourth of July flag brought sufficient significance to it as a simple reference to Georg Grosz's criticism of Nationalism.
